Cleaning Service

Cleaning services involve working to clean the insides of buildings, often cleaning office equipment and paintwork as well.

You will need an adequate range of cleaning equipment (e.g. Cleaning fluids, brushes, cloths etc.) to use on the products and surfaces that you clean, and protective gloves and overalls to protect you from any strong chemicals.

Patience is a useful quality for a cleaner, as you will be doing jobs that most people consider chores. It also helps if you are reasonably fit, as you will usually be doing active work. Transport is not essential, but will help in allowing you to get to places of work more easily. You may also be working unusual hours as a cleaner, including early mornings or late evenings; so you need to be prepared for these.

You do not need any qualifications to become a cleaner, though some courses are available if you wish to move into more management based roles (e.g. Employing and managing cleaning staff). It is important that you know which cleaning chemicals are suitable for specific surfaces, otherwise you risk damaging them.

Cleaners are normally employed by cleaning contractors or hired individually by a company / building; but an increasing number are setting up business on their own.

Although the money you can earn as a cleaner is not great, by running a business yourself; you can keep a bigger share of the income. Competition can be quite high in some areas, but there are lots of potential customers; the market for cleaning services is also steady, and may even be growing.

Remember that there are a number of types of cleaning that you can do; including street cleaning, industrial cleaning and outdoor/graffiti cleaning. These will have different requirements and incomes; but are additional opportunities you can consider.

Cleaners can find customers by visiting premises and speaking to management, and most will advertise in local directories (e.g. Yellow Pages or Thompson Directory), and occasionally in local newspapers.
