Entertainer

Work as an entertainer can take many different forms, whether as a DJ, a clown, a magician or singer; it is your job to entertain an audience for a set period of time.

Whichever form of entertainment that you do, you need to have a friendly and outgoing personality; and to have the necessary abilities to make your performance work.

For Example: If you are a DJ, you need to be able to mix songs together effectively, and to pick songs that the audience will want to dance to.

The equipment that you need will depend on the type of entertainment you do. A DJ will need a large record collection and professional equipment to play it on, a clown will need a good costume and props, and a magician will need a costume and equipment for each trick. You do not need any formal qualifications to become an entertainer, though some are available to help improve your abilities; experience and evidence of ability are two of the most important things that customers will consider. You will always need to tailor your act for the expected audience. Older adults may not want to listen to modern dance music, and young children should not be told rude jokes! Entertainers are usually recommended to have good personal insurance, in case of an accident; and if you work with potential hazards, you are likely to need professional indemnity insurance. Entertainers generally gain some customers from word of mouth recommendation, with business cards and local advertisements (including local directories) allowing potential customers to find your information. If you are successful over a number of months or years, you may want to consider using an agent/agency to help you book performances and gain publicity. Though there will be very strong competition in almost every area, you can earn good money as an effective entertainer, which grows even further as your reputation builds.
