A web design business will involve you creating and managing web sites for other businesses, meeting their needs with a well designed professional service.

You will need to own and be able to use web design software such as Microsoft FrontPage and Macromedia Dreamweaver effectively. You will need to be able to create work of a professional quality every time, and within any deadlines. It is essential that you are good at listening to your customers, understanding their needs; and creating a web site that will meet (or exceed!) their expectations.

The ability to create a site that is visually attractive is vital, and is also one of the hardest parts of web design to learn. You will not start out as an expert; it can take many years to move from basic to professional quality work.

Web design is not just html, there are many additional types of software (e.g. Macromedia Flash and Shockwave) and computer coding languages (e.g. CGI, JavaScript, Perl) that are involved in more complex web design, and only after you are proficient in these can you start to charge higher prices for your work.

Although creating a good website can be very difficult, there are many books, web sites and courses available to help teach you the required skills. You should get as much experience as possible in web design before starting up in business; as many customers will want proof that you can provide a good quality site at the right price.

It is common for web design services to be charged in one of two ways; at a set rate per hour for the work carried out; or most commonly, a fixed rate per website or website page. The hourly rate will ensure you get paid for all work you do; however the customer may wish to know the full price in advance.

Most businesses do not actively seek out website designers, especially if they do not have an existing site; which means that visiting companies and discussing their potential website needs is usually the best way to get business. You need to bear in mind that larger businesses are likely to have their own web design staff or utilise the top web design firms; making small and local businesses the best target.

Web design is not likely to make you rich, but with effort it can provide a decent income. A key advantage is that you can learn as you work; allowing you to develop better services and charge a higher price!
