Starting an eBay Business

Last Updated
July 20, 2010

Introduction

Thousands of entrepreneurs across the country are starting businesses using the online auction site eBay. Without even needing to leave their home, many business owners have created fast growing and profitable companies.

With this in mind, it is not surprising that a huge number of “Make Fast Money on eBay” books and websites have sprung up; many wildly claiming that you can make tens of thousands of pounds in a couple of weeks. However, the simple fact is; as with any business, an eBay business requires a lot of effort and careful planning to succeed.

The following article explains how you can make a profitable business using eBay auctions; explaining the essential things you should know, as well as useful tips to help you get started.

What is eBay ?

eBay is an online auction site, where anybody can sell their products or unwanted goods to the highest bidder. It has been around since 1995, and is one of the most widely recognised websites in the world. It works in a simil ar way to a normal auction, with the winning bidder getting the item. eBay is free to join, with no charges for viewing and buying items.

How Does it Wor k?

Sellers pay a small listing fee to auction their item for a number of days (normally 7); buyers can then bid as many times at they wish. The winning bidder then sends payment to the seller, and the seller sends the item to the buyer. Every bid is a legal contract, which means you cannot easily back out once you have made a bid, and once you have won the item you are required to pay for it; the seller must send the item if they take payment. Although eBay has traditionally been seen as a large garage sale, the fact is that although most items are sold below market price, huge bargains are less common; and both buyers and sellers can get a good deal.
