Illegal Working in the UK: An Employer's Guide

Illegal Working Update

Since 1st May 2004, it is required that all employers request additional documentation from people applying for a job to proof that they can legally work in the UK.

The change is an attempt by the Government to ensure that illegal working in the UK is kept to a minimum.

Employers should note that the change will not make any significant differences to the checks that they are currently required to make.

The change will also give employers confidence that they are employing staff legally and will not be in violation of the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996.

EU Expansion

Since the expansion of the EU, citizens from the 10 new countries which joined the European Union (EU) can legally work in the UK.
