Introduction
Whether for business or personal use, cars are a part of everyday life for the majority of people. Whether travelling to work, to the shops, to see friends, or on business trips; the car is an essential form of transport.
Millions of new and used cars are sold every year in the UK. One of the fastest growing ways to find and buy cars is over the internet. Every day thousands of people buy and sell their cars online, and knowing where to look could help you find the right car quicker than expected.

Types of Online Car Sales
There are two main ways to find and buy a car online, either directly or indirectly.
Directly:
The whole process of buying is carried out online. The finding and choosing of the car, the specification options, the delivery details, finance options, and even part exchanges can be completed online. This is mainly used by manufacturers and a number of specialist online new car dealers such as Jam Jar and Virgin Cars. Used cars are very rarely for sale directly online.
Directly selling means finding online, and buying online.
Indirectly:
The process of finding the car takes place online. When a car is looked at, it has the contact details of the seller listed. Any further contact is carried out offline with the individual company or person. This is used by most second-hand car sellers through listings sites such as Auto Exchange.
Indirectly selling means finding online, and buying offline.
Finding a Car Online
Most online car sites allow you to search for the car you are after.
If you are looking for a new car, the search is normally a lot simpler. You choose the make and model, and then choose the car from a list of specifications.
E.g.: A search for a Honda Civic on one new car site brings up a choice of Diesel hatchback, Petrol hatchback, or both. Choosing both brings up the following (first page):
Honda Civic Hatchback 1.4i E 3door
Honda Civic Hatchback 1.6i VTEC Sport 3door
Honda Civic Diesel Hatchback 1.7i CTDi SE 3door
Honda Civic Diesel Hatchback 1.7i CTDi S 5door
Other specifications (e.g.: colour, interior, tape / cd) can then be chosen as the selling process moves on.
"Searching for a used car can be a lot more complicated"
Searching for a used car can be a lot more complicated, as each car will also have different mileage, age, and condition settings, as well as varying prices. You can either choose the age and condition settings or search through the total results. If purchasing offline, then another key factor is the distance of the car from where you live.
E.g.: A search for a Honda Civic under 6 years old brings up the following:
Honda Civic, Purple, 1998, 49,000 miles
Honda Civic, Silver, 2000, 18,000 miles
(52-2002) Honda Civic 2.0 type r 3-door hatchback, Sat Silver
(52-2002) Honda Civic 1.6 sport 3-door hatchback, Nighthawk Black
A used car search has extra factors to consider, and there are normally far more choices of used car than new car. Each car will have different colours and features, and only some of these may match what you were looking for. The car that best suits your needs may also be located on the other side of the country, making viewing and purchasing more difficult.
