Training & Learning Online

Introduction

All businesses need to have employees and managers that have the necessary skills and knowledge to carry out their job. If you or your employees need to learn about a new skill or product it is likely you will need to arrange for training. This is usually very expensive, however, one of the fastest growing methods of training and learning is through cheaper online courses.

Here is a look at online courses, and what they can offer your business.

What is Online Training and Learning?

Online training and learning involves learning about a subject or skill using specific programs or web pages instead of a book or personal teaching (Although they will usually recommend books to accompany the course). All the information needed for the subject is included in the program, allowing you to complete the whole course at your own pace from your computer.

In most cases, once you have paid for the course/program you can access each ‘lesson’ individually from the training company’s website. A small number of courses will require you to download the whole course program in one go, and then run it from your computer without going back online.

You can arrange for your employees to learn online, or you can take a course individually. Most courses are flexible enough to allow any number of staff to learn at any one time.

There are two main types of online courses, business training courses, and individual academic courses.

Business training courses are aimed at employees and business owners looking to improve their skills in a particular area (E.g.: A marketing course). The courses are fairly short, generally measured by the number of hours learning involved; and are aimed at providing useful information in a short space of time. The vast majority of employee training will be this type of learning.

Business training will not result in any formal qualifications, as it is usually much too short. However, the knowledge that you gain from the training will make any academic learning you wish to do in a particular area slightly easier.

Individual academic courses are aimed at anyone who wishes to learn more about a subject in order to achieve a qualification or diploma (E.g.: A degree or diploma in Business Studies). Academic learning is designed for individuals over a long period of time (Normally between 1-7 years depending on the qualification). Academic learning is aimed at individuals rather than businesses (it would be far too expensive to put employees on most academic courses), however, if you wish to study on an academic course individually, you will learn many skills that can be used to help run your business.

How Can Online Learning Benefit My Business?

(i) Training Employees

Online training allows your employees to learn new skills conveniently over a period of time at a pace that suits them. The training can be in a specific skill (useful for new employees) or general learning aimed at improving an employee’s job performance.

One of the most common types of online training is in programs such as Microsoft Word or Excel. The majority of businesses use these programs, and training can provide your employees with the knowledge they need to use them effectively.

Training helps to make sure that your employees know what is required of them, and also makes introducing new skills or systems (such as a new computer system) much less difficult. Effective training also makes employees feel they are valued by your business; as you are willing to spend money on their development.

Training can be expensive, particularly with a number of employees; however, good quality training will help ensure that employees have the necessary knowledge to do their job well.

(ii) Training Yourself

As a small business owner, you often have to do several important jobs by yourself. You may be involved in sales, marketing, and accounting, as well as the day-to-day running of the business. Training allows you to learn about any area of business that you feel you need to improve in order to have the knowledge to do all the jobs required in your business.

Although training is seen as something for just employees, by learning about business skills you do not currently have; you can widen your knowledge and improve the way you run your business.

If you are starting up a business for the first time, you can use training to learn about key business skills and practices to help you get your business up and running.
