I started www.Postagift.com about six months ago with no outside finance, and as far as the internet and computer systems were concerned absolutely no experience and completely naive. Thought that this is where the big bucks are, so sold my traditional retail business and jumped blindly into the internet, and got a bit of a shock! Settling in nicely now and might even make a profit soon!, after making a lot of mistakes! I thought that all I needed was some products, a web site, some experienced "web marketers" and the skies were the limits.

The internet is just as hard if not harder than the old way of doing business. I soon realised that really an internet site is just like a shop. It's unlikely for to you to open a shop in the middle of some darkened wood and expect customers to flock in dropping cash all over the place. An internet business needs to be advertised, marketed, changed around, new items added, and most importantly customers brought in, made to feel comfortable, happy in their surroundings, confident in you, converted to a sale and then serviced and looked after to be sold to again! And the right customers at that.

All too often I hear people tell me how much traffic they have coming to their site, well that's great, but how many sales are they converting? Sometimes the response is a bit bemusing, as they don't really know or haven't actually thought about it, as their so elated with all the "hits" their getting! Hits are wonderful for your statistics, but only useful to me if they mean potential sales! At least on the High St, it's easy to see that a 9 year old coming in to your expensive furniture shop isn't likely to become a customer, it's not so easy to tell weather an internet hit is from this same 9 year old, or his high earning father who might actually spend something!

The thing is, this is all so new, and the so called expert internet guru's who know how to really shake things up as far as marketing goes haven't impressed me much. Their still learning like the rest of us!
