PDA Input Options and Battery Life

Input

When buying a PDA you need to be sure that it is easy to input data, otherwise you could be left with an expensive paperweight! Almost all PDA’s and some Smartphones use a touch screen for data input, with a few additional buttons to speed up some functions.

Virtually all Palm PDA’s feature handwriting recognition, where you write letters onto the screen and it will turn them into letters in your document/file. Some Pocket PC PDA’s have a similar feature built in, but it varies between models. It is not an essential feature, but is very useful if you are going to use your PDA heavily.

Most PDA’s allow you to enter text from a ‘keyboard’ made up at the bottom of the screen. You simply tap the letters that you wish to type.

Many PDA’s also allow you to attach a separate mini-keyboard to them, allowing you to enter data much more quickly.

Smartphones without a touch screen usually have a micro-keyboard or keyboard like buttons for entering data; these vary from easy and quick to awkward and slow, so always test them before buying!

Battery Life

As the screen size, processor speed, and many other factors affect the battery life of a PDA; they can vary considerably from one model to another, especially as not all models will have the same capacity battery.

You should find out the estimated battery life in hours, and compare it to similar models. A longer battery life is good; but remember that higher powered models are likely to have lower times because of the powerful components. The exact running time will always vary as it depends on what programs, features and settings you use.

GPS

Some PDA’s now come with a Global Positioning System (GPS) installed, this allows you to view maps across the country (or world), see where you are and where you are going. Some models are capable of pinpointing your location to within 5-10metres

You can be navigated by voice on many models, allowing you to walk or drive to your destination without needing to keep checking a map.

GPS can be expensive, but if you are often travelling it can be an extremely useful addition to your PDA; helping you to find meetings and other places easily.

Protect Your Screen!

As one of the most used and expensive parts of a PDA; the touch-screen can be very easily damaged. There are a huge number of protective coverings available, and even some handy hints on how to make your own for next to nothing.
