Total A total solution is usually better for larger businesses, but can also be useful for small businesses with a complex phone setup.
If you wish to replace your whole phone system (i.e.: with an existing switchboard) with a VOIP option, then you can use your broadband connection to control all incoming and outgoing calls. “A more complex setup is usually carried out on an individual basis by VOIP companies…” This requires a converter unit, and a more complex setup, which is usually carried out on an individual basis by VOIP companies; who set up the system to match the needs of your business.
The cost of replacing your entire phone system is much more substantial than simply adding a VOIP service, but is generally much cheaper than installing a standard PBX exchange system. It will also provide substantial call and rental savings across every phone.
Get Started:
- Make sure your broadband connection is properly set up and working.
- Look carefully at the different services; they will have different costs, quality and restrictions.
- Contact the company you wish to use. Explain to them the phone setup that you have. They are likely to arrange a closer look at your business to work out what setup is best for you. You can buy and set up the system yourself, but you will need an extremely detailed knowledge of how the system works to do so.
- Sign up once you find a package and setup that is properly suited to your business.
- The VOIP Company should then install the equipment, or give you full details on how to do it.
- You should now be able to make free internal calls and external calls at a cheaper rate.
Limitations of VOIP
Although VOIP has some huge advantages, it is important to consider the disadvantages to make sure you have a system that is suitable for your business.
Power Failures
As VOIP phones run through an electronic system, they will not work in the event of a power failure; so you may need to keep a back up standard phone line
Call Restrictions
Many VOIP phones are unable to call the operator or make emergency calls, and some are unable to make international calls. This will depend on your service provider, but may mean you will need a backup standard phone line to use in emergencies.
Call Quality
“It may be worth paying more to get a guaranteed call quality…”
Although call quality on VOIP is usually good; because the technology is still in development, there can sometimes be small drop outs in quality. You need to check a VOIP company’s call quality levels before you sign up; and it may be worth paying more to get a guaranteed call quality, especially if phone calls are a key part of your business.
Number
Some VOIP companies will not allow you to use an existing number, so you could have to change your business number, or operate using two numbers. You should always check whether this is the case before going ahead with an agreement.
Protocol
There are a number of different VOIP protocols (the language the phones use to talk to each other), so you need to be certain that all of the phones you buy use the same protocol; otherwise you may not be able to talk between them.
The most common protocol is SIP and should be suitable for most businesses; though you should always check before buying. Article Index1 Introduction 2 Available Options 3 Total 4 Summary
