Eventually all foreign nationals – from outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland – applying to come to the UK for more than six months or those who wish to extend their stay will also need to apply for an identity card. The cards show the person’s name, date of birth, nationality and immigration status, including whe ther or not they have the right to work in the UK. They are the same size as a credit card and have an electronic chip that holds biometric details, such as fingerprints and a digital picture of the person’s face. Check this link
