Writing a Press Release

Introduction

There may be a time when something you believe is newsworthy in your business needs to be released for public awareness. This could be the introduction of your business if you have just started, or even the launch date of a new product/service you have.

There are several ways through marketing that you can do this (advertising, etc), but for a low cost approach, why not issue a ‘press release’. The idea is to deliver your news through media such as magazines and newspapers (local, regional or national).

By issuing a press release and having the added success of being published, your benefit will be that the article has reached a wide (and targeted) audience. Also, the article will be taken more seriously as the reader will know that it has been authorized and printed by a reliable source.

Is it Newsworth y?

Before you start to consider issuing a press release, you have to ask yourself one question: is it newsworthy to be of interest to those that will be reading it ? You may feel that your news is of great importance, but will it be to anyone else ? If not, then it is fair to say that your press release will not be published.

Journalists have a reputation to maintain and will only follow up on things that they believe will make interesting news to their readers. Although not always the case, press releases may be considered more if the news is related to story’s/ articles that the media is currently following.
