Are You Risking Business Damage by Not Checking Employees CVs Sufficiently?
If
your business is considering hiring new
permanent or temporary staff in the near
future, have you thought about whether the
information given in a candidates CV will be
truthful?
Research from BackgroundChecking.com has
found that 84% of people in the UK think
that being untruthful on job application
forms or in CVs is commonplace. This is
despite the fact that 95 per cent of the
1,500 people questioned agree that it is
important for people to be 100 per cent
accurate in the information they provide
about themselves when applying for a new job
or completing their CVs.
If you hire an employee and it turns out
they don’t actually have the skills or
qualifications they claimed to have; your
business could be at risk, through reduced
productivity and failure to complete tasks
amongst other things.
Steve Bailey, managing director of
BackgroundChecking.com, comments: “Many
candidates and fraudsters rely on the fact
that prospective employers do not check the
information on, or omitted from, their CVs
and applications, or discussed in their
interview. They therefore take this
opportunity to embellish or completely
re-invent the truth.
You need to make sure that you are (as a
minimum) checking the references of your
chosen candidate; and ensure you ask
interview questions that check the candidate
has the required knowledge and skills needed
to do the job. If your new role is
important, or your business requires high
security or secrecy, then you should
consider using an external background
checking service to confirm your candidate
has the history they claim.
This service can be useful for smaller
businesses that do not have the capacity to
do the background checks that larger
companies can make. The one off cost would
also be far cheaper than the potential
damage if a fraudulent candidate was
employed by you.
A useful tool has also just been launched by
BackgroundChecking.com, it is called Temp
Check, and allows quick and efficient
checking of temporary workers.
