Important Change to Business Postal Services - Royal Mail Changes

You need to be aware that changes to the postal service could cost you money or damage your business relationships if not dealt with.

The Royal Mail has previously provided a free service of returning all undeliverable mail, however they are now destroying all undeliverable business mail which does not have an external rear address (ERA). This could cause serious problems if you are sending important or time-sensitive mail.

To ensure that an undelivered item will be returned you need to place a return address on the back (near the top) of the envelope. This still applies if you are using a franked mail system (automatic postage metering and stamping device) to send your letters.

John Davies from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, said: "Although Royal Mail stated that all companies on their records using franked mail systems were sent notification of this new procedure, the letters were only addressed to the company name, not individuals. Many of these letters could, therefore, have failed to reach the right person and businesses may be left unaware of the changes.

Some good news however is that Royal Mail will be offering small business customers a 1p discount off new stamp prices when using a franking machines or pre-paid envelopes.
