Don't Let Recruitment Issues Hinder Your Business Growth

If your business is struggling to find and recruit staff, you are certainly not alone; new research shows that one in five SME’s say their growth is inhibited by an inability to recruit staff.

The research conducted on behalf of the Tenon Forum shows that the difficulty of recruitment is the second biggest growth barrier after market conditions. This is commonly believed to be due to the higher salaries and benefits that larger businesses can often provide; however, smaller businesses can also offer a number of distinct advantages to new staff.

The level of the problem varies depending on the region and industry your business operates in, but there is no harm in attempting to address the problem when next recruiting. When searching and advertising for employees, why not emphasize the benefits that working for an SME can bring (as long as they could apply to your business), including:

  • Quicker opportunities for promotion

  • Better opportunities for career enhancement

  • Better job flexibility

  • More time flexibility

  • More direct contact with senior management

  • Easier to gain a high profile within the company

This research comes as the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has also found that a huge number of businesses (85%) are struggling to fill vacancies. The CIPD also found that over a third of UK firms are resorting to looking abroad to find suitable candidates.

One answer to these problems may be to consider older candidates, many over 50’s are finding their experience and skills are going to waste in favour of younger staff. Capitalising on their skills could give your business an important edge when it comes to recruiting; it would also help you to avoid any potential claims when age discrimination legislation comes into force in 2006.
