Could Your Business Benefit from Better Design?
If
your business is one of the many that does
not spend on design services, the results of
a new survey by the Design Council may make
interesting reading. If your business
already invests in design, then the results
are definitely good news!
On average, every £100 a ‘design alert’
business spends on design increases turnover
by £225; while over three quarters of
businesses who see design as important say
that both their turnover and competitiveness
have increased because of it.
The survey also shows that design alert
businesses each increase their market share
by an average of 6.3% through using design;
and businesses that are increasing their
investment in design are more likely to have
turnover growth than those who are
decreasing their investment.
Some manufacturers reported that design
increased their market share by 100%; in
other words, good design helped them to
either completely take over a market or
create a brand new one which they had full
control of!
Design can add value to your products and
services; in fact, less than half of
businesses that see design as important
compete on price, compared to two thirds of
those who do not see it as important. So if
you are struggling to compete with price
cuts, design could help you to stand out and
add value to your products.
Good design is a key part of most successful
large businesses; and is becoming
increasingly important in the growth and
success of small and medium sized
businesses. This survey clearly shows that
well planned and sensible investment in
design has the potential to provide you with
huge benefits.
It is important to remember that not all
designers are good, as with all services you
need to look around and find a quality
provider that can meet your needs at the
right price; but investing in a good
designer can bring huge benefits in both the
short term (E.g.: Increased sales, added
value) and long term (E.g.: Bigger, more
professional business image, increased
customer loyalty).
