Help Prevent Your Business Falling Victim to Identity Theft

Businesses are now estimated to lose at
least £50million a year from fraudsters
stealing their identity to obtain finance,
goods or services by deception. As part of
an initiative to help businesses combat
identity (ID) theft; the Metropolitan Police
are working with Companies House and credit
reference agency Experian to raise awareness
of the threats and ways you can minimise
them.
One of the best ways to protect your
business is to register with the “Proof”
scheme at Companies House. This means that
you can only alter your company or director
details online, with the protection of a
password, confidential authentication code,
and access through your registered email
address. Many ID thefts occur when
fraudsters file fake documents to change a
company’s details to their own; if you
register with the Proof system they will no
longer be able to do this.
You can also sign up to an “alert” system,
which automatically alerts you to any
changes in your company’s details or
additions to your directors list; allowing
you to act quickly in the event of possible
ID theft.
ID theft can be a damaging and costly
problem for businesses that fall victim to
it, leaving a damaged reputation with
customers and possible tensions with
suppliers and finance providers. If you have
not yet taken any steps to protect your
business from ID theft, now is the time to
act.
Information on the “Proof” system is
available from the Companies House website
here.
