Are You Ready for Age Discrimination Legislation?
The new age discrimination legislation comes
into force in October, yet a surprising
number of small businesses have yet to
prepare for the numerous changes they may
need to make.
Although
the legislation may appear to be solely
about older workers; it does in fact apply
to employees (and job applicants) of any
age. If you have employees then you need to
find out what aspects of the legislation
apply to your business, as well as finding
out what areas may apply in the future
(E.g.: Promotions, retirement, recruitment).
Employment relations organisation Acas is
helping businesses to prepare by offering a
free guide to putting the regulations into
practice. It
covers the key issues, including training,
equal opportunities, recruitment, promotion,
performance appraisals, sickness pay,
conditions, benefits, redundancy, pensions
and retirement.
Speaking at an age discrimination conference
in London, Acas Chair Rita Donaghy said:
"A
lot of organizations are under the
impression that the regulations will not
affect them - this simply is not true. Age
discrimination can affect employees of any
age, not just the young and old. The
legislation comes into effect in October and
the frightening fact is that recent research
shows around 80 per cent of UK organizations
are not training or informing their staff
about it."
One of the aims of the guidance is to show
that age equality can be a positive and
productive thing for your business. By being
age-positive, you can help make the most of
the skills and abilities of your employees;
regardless of their age.
