Energy Advice for Small Businesses - Energywatch

If your business has its own office or shop, then you will be using energy; but have you stopped to think about whether you are getting a fair deal?

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and energywatch are making the point that although small business energy use is very similar to domestic use; businesses do not receive the same amount of protection or regulatory safeguards. They are calling for energy companies to deliver fair and clear contracts, better customer service, and accurate, timely bills.

John Holbrow, FSB Environment Chairman, said: “At a time when energy costs for small businesses are spiralling out of control, the least small firms expect is to be treated fairly. It is not acceptable for some gas and electricity companies to get away with unclear pricing policies, misleading sales calls and ineffective complaints procedures”

To help you choose a fair contract, and get both a good price and good service; energywatch provides a range of information on what to look out for and avoid in business energy contracts.

There are many different clauses that energy firms put into contracts, some allow them to increase prices whenever they want; and the worst allow them to remain your supplier for as long as they wish by matching the best offer you get. Remember a low energy price does not always mean the lowest cost contract; you may get charged more for extras or other services.

Paul Savage, head of energywatch’s Business Unit, said: “Starting a business can be a headache, so nobody needs the added complication that underhand sales practices, patchy customer service and unreliable billing practices can bring. The industry needs to make the connection with their business consumers to find out how they can start making small business’ lives easier.

“The good news is that energywatch can offer small businesses specialist free help and advice on 0845 90 60 708 or businesses.enquiries@energywatch.org.uk.”
