Paying too much tax

Published
March 13, 2010

If an employee believes they are paying too much tax, you need to refer them to the Tax Office. Although you are informed of the PAYE tax code they are on, you are not informed why and how that tax code is allocated. That is information the Tax Office will only discuss with the individual employee.

If they are paying too much tax, you can repay them the overpayment when you receive their new tax code notification as long as it arrives before the tax year ends. If the tax code notification arrives after the tax year ends, the Tax Office will send the repayment directly to your employee. Your employee might be paying too much tax because they are on an emergency tax code. Find out more about emergency tax codes.
