Outsourcing: Could Your Business Benefit?

Outsourcing is commonly seen as being for big businesses only, and while this has traditionally been the case; there are an increasing number of opportunities for small businesses to effectively use outsourcing to cut costs. While there are still not enough companies providing outsourcing services designed for small businesses, the number is increasing.

Despite the ‘big business’ image, you may find that you could save time and money by using outsourcing effectively. You can get tasks done without the need for in-house staff taking up space and wage costs; and improving technology makes outsourcing office functions much more efficient.

There are of course some risks with outsourcing, you have to trust an external company to represent your business or work with your information; but by planning carefully you can minimize these risks whilst still saving money.

Business administration firm Premier Clerical has created a useful set of tips to help you get the best result from your outsourcing:

  • Look for a provider who can tailor their services to your needs.  Small businesses have very individual needs and any systems the business already employs needs to be clearly understood by a service provider.

  • Don’t be afraid of change.  The right company will make suggestions for how to best support you and this could involve changing some of the ways you work, meaning improved efficiency and cost-cutting.

  • Agree the exact terms of the service you are requesting, detailed in a service agreement.  This doesn’t need to be a lengthy and convoluted document, but must set out all practical aspects and service standards.  At the same time, in the early stages, do not be discouraged by small mistakes, as these will be ironed out and strengthen and improve your new infrastructure systems.

  • Look for a company with the resources to grow with you.  Do your homework and don’t be afraid to ask questions about the service provider to satisfy you and be confident in their ability to serve your requirements.
