What are Quangos? – the answer is “quasi-autonomous non-governmental organisations” – they are arm’s-length bodies funded by Whitehall government departments but not run by them.

After all the publicity only 29 will be completely abolished and 18 will be merged. Final figures will drop from 901 to 648, 289 of them will undergo some form of reform to save cash, 192 organisations would no longer be public bodies.
More than 20,000 staff are waiting to see if their jobs will be retained. of pills

Emma Boon, from the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: ‘It’s good to see action on trimming the quango state. But ministers shouldn’t be allowed to quietly shift the functions of redundant bodies elsewhere.” Tony Woodley, joint leader of the Unite union, said: ‘The fact that Francis Maude is unable to say how much will be saved and how many jobs will be affected shows the threadbare nature of the thinking behind these plans.’ The Football Licensing Authority (FLA) which was set up to oversee safety at football grounds after the Hillsborough disaster which killed 96 Liverpool fans is to be scrapped. Many more football fans were crush injured during the FA Cup semi-final match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Leppings Lane end. The Audit Commission, the Health Protection Agency, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority and eight regional development agencies will be abolished. Those retained include: Acas, the Competition Appeals Tribunal, the Higher Education Funding Council for England, the Low Pay Commission, UK Trade International, the Charity Commission for England and Wales and the Committee on Standards in Public Life.
