A Comment Posted Febuary 2000: Re Incubation
On the strength of our initial business plan, my start up team have been offered a position within an incubation unit of a major consultancy. It’s a detailed plan, but still needs fleshing out in some areas.
We have not yet presented to anyone else, and are attracted by the service offered. However, we feel that we have all the “incubation” skills within our team. Could anyone offer any perspectives on the merits of incubation with a consultant vs. going direct to VC ?

Rather depends on the nature of the project. If there is significant novelty, the dangers of starting small in an incubator is that you risk competition on your source idea at a time before you have the funds to properly compete on a larger scale. Incubators have a valuable role to play for non-novel projects run by people without all the skills or facilities but who wish to succeed with a profitable business first rather than to conquer the world. If, as you say, your business plan still needs ‘fleshing out’ then that should be the priority before you go ‘live’. That needn’t take long.. You are obviously at a critical stage and the next step has to be the right one. Graham Ross Ross & Co, Solicitors.

In the USA there exists an organisation called the Studies of business incubation show that former incubates (?) value the networking and introduction capabilities of the incubator most.
